The Vineyard
The Vineyard
Our Brightwater vineyard lies about 15km from the coast and is nestled under the Richmond Ranges on the southern end of the Waimea Plains. The soil is a combination of rocks and river boulders, which is hard on farm equipment but vital for holding the warmth of Nelson’s sun and ripening grapes. Low nutrient and water levels in the vineyard help to restrict plant vigour, producing fruit with lively, concentrated flavour. To further enhance aromatics, we remove leaves to allow light
penetration and air movement around the fruiting zone.
Winemaker's Notes
Winemaker's Notes
Zweigelt is a red grape variety origination in Hermann's homeland of Austria. It is a favourite at Seifried family gatherings. Our Brightwater vineyard has just 11 rows, totalling less than one hectare of Zweigelt vines.
Zweigelt has full round berries and bunches, with rich purple skin and intense fruit flavours. The grapes were de-stemmed and fermented on their skins, and hand-plunged twice a day. Following fermentation, the wine was gently pressed from the skins and transferred to a mixture o f new and three-year-old French oak barriques. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and remained in the barrel for 11 months. The wine was racked from the barrel and bottled in February 2026.

"Dark cherries and violet characters radiate from the glass. The palate has warm berry fruit notes with hints of chocolate and fresh nutmeg. Well balanced oak tannins leave a long warm finish."
Heidi Seifried-Houghton, Winemaker.
